The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to create and support life-changing friendships for children. By doing this, its vision is to create positive change within our community through the power of one-to-one mentoring. Having positive adult role models in kids’ lives can help boost their self-confidence and creating higher self-esteem. It also helps kids to make good choices, allowing them to live up to their full potential.
Over the summer, we had the opportunity to have some fun while also raising money for BBBS through its 2016 Bowl for Kids’ Sake Kansas City bowling tournament. We formed a bowling team of six people, with a goal to raise at least $1,200 before the bowling event.
To raise money, we held a happy-hour fundraiser. There was delicious food donated from Slim Chickens and Houlihan’s, as well as drinks for a small entry fee. We then raffled off several items donated from partners around the community — Royals’ tickets, gift cards, concert tickets and selfie sticks, among others. We even had a spot on a digital billboard donated to us. That was a generous and unique prize provided by Lamar. It was a fun night and, with other donations over the course of a couple of months, Kazoo raised $3,229 in total. We were No. 2 for the amount of donations we raised in the K.C. Summer Bowling Tournament. Overall, the event surpassed its goal and raised $736,441. Thanks to the successful event, several matches in K.C. will be made, connecting Bigs and Littles.
A special thanks to the following partners for their generous donations: Chezelle, Cumulus, Dojo, Entercom, Feds Kids, Hearst, Houlihan’s, Lamar, Lou Drews, Max Point, NCC, Outfront, Pandora, Slim Chickens, Steel City, Big Machine Parts and Suzanne Gunning.
